MEDEC TO LAUNCH NEW IMAGING SECTOR WITH INDUSTRY LEADER

PHILIPS HEALTHCARE TO JOIN MEDEC, THE NATIONAL MEDICAL DEVICE ASSOCIATION

Toronto (January 30, 2008) – In a move demonstrating industry stewardship, Philips Healthcare, a Canadian leader in medical imaging and patient monitoring systems, has joined MEDEC, the national industry association representing Canada’s medical device technology companies.

This move also marks the imminent launch of the MEDEC Imaging Sector, which will address issues that affect patient access to imaging technologies, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and computed tomography.

MEDEC already works with governments and other stakeholders to improve the health of Canadians in the areas of cardiac care, diabetes, vision care, orthopaedics and in-vitro diagnostics. The new Imaging Sector, triggered by Philips Healthcare’s membership with the association, will increase the scope and impact of MEDEC’s advocacy for patient access to medical technologies.

According to Philips Vice President, John Cieslowski, the company views membership with MEDEC as a way to expand interaction with clients beyond the traditional bounds of vendor and customer.

Philips Healthcare offers a portfolio of medical systems including best-in-class technologies in X-ray, cardiovascular, ultrasound, magnetic resonance, computed tomography, nuclear medicine, PET, radiation oncology systems, patient monitoring products and healthcare informatics -- designed to provide faster and more accurate diagnosis and treatment.

The Canadian headquarters is located in Markham, Ontario and employs more than 365 Canadians.

Telehealth Up and Running in All Rural Yukon Communities

Whitehorse, January 17, 2008 - Health and Social Services Minister Brad Cathers today announced that all Yukon communities have improved health care services with the expansion of the Yukon Telehealth Network. Telehealth links patients from remote communities with clinicians at a distance through secure networks.

"Today, every Yukon community has the ability to link through the Yukon Telehealth Network to provide increased health services and supports within that community," Cathers said. "This is a true feat of technology. The contribution from Canada Health Infoway and the hard work of dedicated people over the past number of years ensured that today arrived."

The minister used the Diabetes Education Centre as a good example of how telehealth works.

"Individuals diagnosed with diabetes are not always able to travel to Whitehorse on a regular basis for training or support. The Diabetes Education Centre staff can connect with their clients in the communities through the telehealth network in the rural health centres to provide one-on-one sessions. This means that people don't have to leave their communities to get the services they need," Cathers added.

"Telehealth increases access to care for those from remote and isolated communities," Canada Health Infoway President and CEO Richard Alvarez said. "Today we are celebrating a real milestone for residents of all Yukon communities who, thanks to technology, now have increased access to much needed health care."

The Yukon Telehealth Network began in 2002. Old Crow, Dawson City, Mayo, Haines Junction, Watson Lake and Whitehorse were the initial communities; followed by Beaver Creek, Destruction Bay, Carmacks and Pelly Crossing. Communications technology has continued to improve where today telehealth can be implemented in all Yukon communities. This expansion has been accomplished by community nursing and information technology (IT) staff with funding from Canada Health Infoway.

Canadian First: Pharmacists and Physicians Exchanging Medical Data Stored In Patients' Electronic Medical Records

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, January 22, 2008 - Pharmacists in Sault Ste. Marie are Canada's first to access lab test results, allergies and other vital data from consenting patients' electronic medical records.

Working so collaboratively with primary care physicians at Group Health Centre means pharmacists now have accurate and comprehensive medical data on the patients they care for, which will help reduce adverse medical events.

"With access to GHC's electronic records, pharmacists in Sault Ste. Marie are now able to fully collaborate with physicians and the rest of the provider team and resolve drug-related issues more effectively and efficiently for their patients," said Ken Burns, pharmacist and chair of the Ontario Pharmacists' Association.

"The addition of pharmacists is a natural and long overdue component of the circle of care. This program enables me to make better use of the expertise provided by pharmacists, make more efficient use of my time and hopefully, provides a more convenient and effective patient experience," said Dr. Lewis O'Brien, Family Physician, Algoma District Medical Group, Physician Lead, EMRxtra Project.

Launched in August 2006 as a pilot project with 300 patients, EMRxtra is one of more than 240 initiatives across Canada that are uncovering efficiencies throughout the country's health care system by digitizing the information flow. These projects will also save money, help reduce the number of adverse medical events and improve patient safety.

EMRxtra is supported by a $2 million investment from Canada Health Infoway.

"To make the most of our health care system, we need to provide the tools clinicians need to deliver the care their patient deserve," said Richard Alvarez, President and CEO of Canada Health Infoway, the federally-funded, independent not-for-profit organization which invests with public sector partners to accelerate electronic health records across Canada. "As other industries have already proven, information technologies can provide a tremendous upside in terms of improving productivity and service delivery. While we're still in the early days of leveraging IT in our health care system here in Canada, the work that's being done in Group Health Centre stands as one of the country's 'shining lights'."

About Group Health Centre (GHC): A multidisciplinary, not-for-profit, community-based health organization serving over 60,000 primary care patients in Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District. Our vision is to provide leadership and achieve excellence in healthcare and wellness promotion in an atmosphere of caring and respect for the individual. GHC is home to one of the most technologically advanced physician group practices (The Algoma District Medical Group) in Canada with an electronic medical record (EMR) system implemented since 1997 and is considered as a primary care model across Canada. With the exception of the pharmacist, our multidisciplinary team is very comprehensive, including physicians, nurse practitioners, physiotherapists, chiropodists, dietitians, optometrists, audiologists and others.

Infoway negotiates preferred solution agreement with electronic health record (EHR) viewer provider

Toronto, January 11, 2008 - Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) today announced it has negotiated preferential conditions and pricing with Orion Health through a Preferred Solution Agreement for their ConcertoTM Physician Portal, an EHR viewer.

EHR viewers are secure web-based applications that integrate patient information from various sources into a single record, unique to each patient.

"We are making great progress towards the modernization of Canadian patients' health information and that means more and more clinical data is being captured and stored electronically," said Richard Alvarez, President and CEO of Canada Health Infoway, the federally-funded, independent not-for-profit organization which invests with public sector partners to accelerate electronic health records across Canada. "The EHR viewer is a vital tool for clinicians because it is the electronic gateway to the information clinicians rely on to make appropriate care decisions for their patients."

The Canada-wide agreement will help accelerate the implementation of electronic health records, making it simpler for provinces and territories to acquire a health record viewer solution.

An EHR viewer eliminates the need for health care practitioners to learn multiple computer interfaces and improves accuracy by bringing information from across numerous systems into one familiar screen that is customizable for each user's requirement. These systems have many benefits when implemented in a standards-based environment.

Infoway's Preferred Solution Agreements show that participating vendors like Orion have a deep understanding of the pan-Canadian EHR and the need to adopt established standards to ensure interoperability. While Infoway believes that these agreements offer significant value, the selection of specific vendors rests with the individual province or territory.

Pharmacist and Patient Access to Medical Records will Improve Healthcare in Sault Ste-Marie

Announced in August 9, 2006 this project is now reality -- on January 22, 2008

Hear and see what a local patient, physician and pharmacist have to say about EMRxtra (3 1/2 minute video.) Just Click here.

Sault Ste-Marie, Ontario, August 9, 2006 - Canada Health Infoway Inc. (Infoway), Group Health Centre (GHC) and the Ontario Pharmacists' Association (OPA) launched a new $3.5-million initiative today which will help reduce medication errors and provide better patient care in Sault Ste. Marie by allowing pharmacists to have access to clinical information about patients electronically.

Through the Group Health Centre's Electronic Medical Record, healthcare providers will share information about patients with pharmacists. The Electronic Medical Record, established several years ago, has already been valuable in sharing information amongst healthcare providers and will now be extended to include pharmacists, in an initiative called EMRxtra. The information will be shared in a secure manner and will require patient consent.

"This project demonstrates how technology facilitates the rapid exchange of information," said federal Health Minister Tony Clement. "Our investments in Canada Health Infoway are harnessing the power of information technology to increase productivity, enhance safety, improve information sharing, and deliver better, more timely access to care for all Canadians, no matter where they live."

"We're pleased to help support this initiative which will not only help to improve the quality of care for patients of the Group Health Centre, but can also serve as a model for improving healthcare in Canada," said Richard Alvarez, Infoway's President and CEO. Infoway is investing $2 million in EMRxtra.

"The Group Health Centre is a well-known leader and pioneer in primary care delivery and in the utilization of technology by a multidisciplinary team. This innovative program will allow us to expand our existing circle of care to integrate pharmacists into our programs," said Group Health Centre's Interim COO Teresa D'Angelo.

With the permission of participating patients, pharmacists will be able to access patient drug profiles, current lab test results; clinical intent of prescribed medications and the patient's care plan.

Over 20 pharmacies will participate in EMRxtra, which includes 40 to 50 pharmacists. The project will first be used with a pilot group of several hundred patients and then be extended to all GHC 60,000 patients.

Pharmacists, who are considered to be trusted and accessible health care providers in the community, provide a significant contribution to primary care delivery particularly in the area of chronic disease and medication management. Studies have shown that pharmacist interventions in collaboration with physicians are very effective in cases of patients with chronic diseases.

"The addition of pharmacists is a natural and long overdue component of the circle of care. This program will enable me to make better use of the expertise provided by pharmacists, make more efficient use of my time and hopefully provide a more convenient and effective patient experience," said Dr. Lewis O'Brien, Family Physician, Algoma District Medical Group, Physician Lead, EMRxtra Project:

"With access to an electronic system, pharmacists in Sault Ste. Marie will be able to fully collaborate with physicians and the rest of the provider team and resolve drug related issues more effectively and efficiently for their patients," said Marc Kealey, CEO of the Ontario Pharmacists' Association.

This initiative will also provide patients with greater access to their individual Electronic Medical Record which includes a record of diagnoses and treatment, including medications. A personalized web-accessible patient record tool will enhance engagement of patients in the self-management and decision-making process.

Infoway Negotiates Canada-wide Preferred Solution Agreement with MedPlus, Inc. for Laboratory Information Systems

Toronto, January 17, 2008 - Canada Health Infoway (Infoway) today announced it has negotiated preferential conditions and pricing with MedPlus, Inc. through a national Preferred Solution Agreement for Laboratory Information Systems. MedPlus is the health care information technology subsidiary of Quest Diagnostics Incorporated. This Canada-wide agreement will help accelerate the implementation of laboratory information systems, which automate the flow of laboratory requisitions and results.

"Laboratory test results are vital because they provide health care professionals with the information they need to support decision-making and case management at the point of care. Yet for every 1,000 lab tests performed, up to 150 are wasteful duplicates when results are tracked on pieces of paper that can be misplaced," said Richard Alvarez, President and CEO of Canada Health Infoway, the federally-funded, independent not-for-profit organization which invests with public sector partners to accelerate electronic health records across Canada. "Implementation of electronic access to laboratory information will help reduce unnecessary duplicate tests and help speed diagnosis, resulting in quicker access to appropriate care."

"MedPlus is delighted to be Infoway's first laboratory information system Preferred Solution Provider. With over 120,000 physicians currently using the Care360TM system we are confident that Canadian health care providers will be pleased with the features and functionality of our user-friendly solution," said Richard Mahoney, President of MedPlus and Vice-president of Healthcare Information Solutions at Quest Diagnostics.

Laboratory information systems automate information flow, which allows authorized health care professionals - such as doctors and nurses - to spend less time tracking results manually and more time providing patient care. They also provide a secure, electronic view of a patient's test results regardless of where the original test was completed.

Through preferred solution agreements with participating vendors such as MedPlus, the Canadian health care system benefits from leveraging experts with a deep understanding of the pan-Canadian EHR and the country's need to adopt established standards to ensure interoperability. Dublin Methodist Hospital Opens as All-Digital Facility with McKesson Healthcare IT Systems

Patient safety and caregiver support get boost from Horizon Clinicals electronic health records

ATLANTA--(Business Wire)--McKesson, the world's largest healthcare services, automation and
information technology company, announced that Dublin Methodist
Hospital, part of OhioHealth, is opening today as one of the nation's
few all-digital, full-service community hospitals. McKesson worked
with the brand new 94-bed facility as it was being constructed to
implement a full electronic health records (EHR) system using the
Horizon Clinicals(R) suite, which supports more than 2 million
clinicians nationwide.

"As we open for patient care, we truly know what it means to have
McKesson 'in the room' with our caregivers," said Cheryl Herbert,
R.N., president of Dublin Methodist Hospital. "We designed information
technology into the building as an essential component of care and
committed early on to 100 percent system adoption by physicians,
nurses and the rest of the care team. This is in keeping with our
partnership in the Pebble Project, a national group of healthcare
organizations focused on following best practices in design that have
proven to enhance not only quality of care, the patient experience and
financial performance, but ultimately patient outcomes. We see
healthcare IT as a key enabler in helping us achieve these
objectives."

McKesson incorporated its technology within the framework of the
"high-tech, high-touch" approach to healthcare that Dublin Methodist
Hospital is bringing to its patients. Doctors, nurses and other
medical staff will have easy online access to patient information when
and where it is needed at the point of care. A computerized physician
order entry system supports doctors as they make decisions and place
patient orders. Caregivers can chart patient care at the bedside and
check to see what was done on the previous shift. Using bar-code
scanning technology, nurses will scan patients' arm bracelet IDs so
bar-coded medications can be scanned and compared, ensuring they get
the right dose of the right medication, at the right time, following
the right route.

"Everything that McKesson has implemented in this hospital is
designed to meet the changing needs of patients and to improve their
experience," said Mrunal Shah, M.D., vice president of Physician IT
Services for Dublin Methodist Hospital. "This is not just a few extra
products to reduce paperwork, but a full digital infrastructure. The
most important part is that everything is clincally integrated so we
can easily find the information we need. The connectivity allows
doctors to treat patients in the hospital, in their office or at home,
and allows for more time for the clinician to spend with the patient."

Through its involvement in the Pebble Project, a research effort
led by The Center for Health Design, a nonprofit research and advocacy
organization, Dublin Methodist Hospital also focuses on the softer
side of care.

-- The hospital features all private rooms that are big enough
for patients, families and caregivers to help reduce stress,
reduce the chance of infection and improve confidentiality.

-- All rooms are designed and laid out exactly the same way.
What's on the left in one room will be on the left in the next
room, reducing patient care errors.

-- The hospital's interior courtyards allow natural light to
reach nearly 90 percent of all spaces, and the facility also
boasts rooftop gardens, a waterfall and trees in the lobby.

-- Staff work stations are decentralized and open to bring
caregivers closer to their patients.

Herbert noted that the softer side needs technology to be a fully
integrated experience. McKesson products include tracking boards in
the emergency department to advise caregivers of patient status,
leading to greater efficiency and shorter wait times. A centralized
scheduling system enables more efficient use of equipment, staff time
and facilities, while a surgical management system aids in automating
operating room processes. Using McKesson's RelayHealth(R) network, the
hospital can electronically process patient bills and insurance
claims, while also enabling patients to review their statements and
manage their accounts online. And McKesson's analytical tools will
enable the executive team and managers to make ongoing improvements in
clinical, financial and operational performance.

"The system that McKesson has developed for Dublin Methodist
Hospital is the future of healthcare happening right in front of us,"
said Thomas Harmon M.D., medical staff president for Dublin Methodist
Hospital. "The products are focused on improving patient care at every
level and are very intuitive. This is not technology for technology's
sake - it is making us better doctors."

"McKesson is proud to partner with OhioHealth and the team at
Dublin Methodist Hospital as they open one of the most advanced
hospitals in the country," said Sunny Sanyal, chief operating officer,
McKesson Provider Technologies. "Their vision for safe, connected
healthcare is inspiring, and we look forward to supporting them as
they pursue clinical excellence and enhanced patient outcomes."
